dealing with the 'blips'

It's about this far into Resolutions made on 1st Jan that we all give up as we find it all hard to cope with the pressure of keeping them: self-harm is no different. For those of us who promised ourselves that we would stop this year, we may have hit the 'blip' time. Because of the addictive nature of self-harm it is almost impossible to stop by going 'cold turkey' (i.e. just stopping with nothing else in place) so this adds to the build up of feelings and therefore, the 'blip' time of harming again once. And, like opening a packet of hobnobs, once we do it once - our brains say we might as well keep going as we have 'failed'. It's NOT true!!! think of all that you learnt between 'blips', think about the days you did manage to find another way, think of the urges you were able to overcome, or, even, the extra delay of the 10 mins you waited before harming: each time you don't harm when you want to, each time you delay harming: YOU WIN!! don't focus on the blips, think about the WINS!

ALUMINA

Alumina is a free, online 7 week course for young people struggling with self-harm. Each course has up to 8 young people, all accessing the sessions from their own phones, tablets or laptops across the UK. The courses take place on different evenings of the week and are run by friendly, trained counsellors and volunteer youth workers. You don’t need an adult to refer you or sign you up, and no-one will see or hear you during the sessions – you’ll just join in via the chatbox. We want to help you to find your next steps towards recovery, wherever you are on your journey.
